MEET OUR STAFF: General Manager Marika

Who are you and what do you do on a daily basis?

I am Marika Arnell, and I work as the General Manager of two distinct boutique hotels in Helsinki, Hotel Fabian and Hotel Haven. My work is wonderfully varied: my days seamlessly accommodate everything from tracking financial figures to team meetings, as well as ensuring that property maintenance and facilities run smoothly.

Staff well-being and a smooth daily workflow are of great importance to me, because when the team thrives, it reflects directly on our guests. My greatest passion is high customer satisfaction—I want to ensure that every guest feels right at home and truly welcome with us.

What do you recommend to do in Helsinki?

Fabian is located right by the sea and Helsinki's most famous sights, making it the perfect base for exploring the city. As a Helsinki native myself, I especially love the city in the summertime.

My warmest childhood memories are tied to the Hakaniemi Market Square and Market Hall, where I used to head with my family to pick up fresh fish and other delicacies—so I warmly recommend visiting the local markets and Helsinki's wonderful market halls! In addition, a great way to discover the city is by going for a jog along the beautiful coastlines, or by renting a bike for either a self-guided adventure or a guided cycling tour.

What kind of things make you feel good?

I get energy and joy from being helpful or bringing a smile to someone's face—whether it’s a family member, a hotel guest, or a colleague. It is often the small, thoughtful acts in everyday life that make the biggest difference.

What is the best thing about working at Fabian?

As a newcomer to Fabian, I have been completely charmed by the hotel’s unique coziness and warm atmosphere. Fabian has an approachable vibe and an exceptionally committed team, whom it is an absolute joy to work with!

Tell us about your most memorable joyful encounter with a hotel guest!

The best part of this job is definitely those genuine, unhurried encounters. The most memorable moments aren't necessarily the grand gestures, but the perfectly ordinary, warm conversations in the hallways or chatting over breakfast. It's wonderful when I get the chance to share my own local tips and restaurant recommendations with our guests.

What was your #GoodDeedOfTheDay today?

Today, I was able to ease a friend's busy schedule by offering them a ride. A small act for me, but a huge help to my friend's day!
